Toronto Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival
The Toronto Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival is a festival at Ontario Place in Canada. Sponsored by Rogers Media, the Chinese Lantern Festival is the biggest festival of lanterns outside Asia. The lanterns – large illuminated and animated displays often with a metal frame covered with paper and plastic – can be as high as 50 feet and also as long as 300 feet.

The Toronto event is based on the historical Chinese Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth and final day of the Chinese New Years celebration. According to legend, a maid the Imperial Palace, named Yuanxiao, wanted to be home with her family for the Chinese New Year. She told the emperor that the God of Fire visited her and told her that he planned to burn down the city. She suggested that the emperor should make the city look like it was already burning so the God of Fire wouldn’t bother them. The emperor thus had the entire court and city put up colored lanterns and light firecrackers to mimic a great fire. In the confusion, Yuanxiao was able to sneak home. Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival 2006 was between July 19 and October 11.(for it was so popular, it has been extended a few days)It is the cultural exchange programs between the two countries China and Canada. Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival Toronto, Ontario in Canada at amusement park, it is the largest Chinese culture and arts and crafts activities in the Western Hemisphere this year. The theme of this event was about Chinese traditional culture. And Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival get more than 200,000 visitors this year, it’s a great success.

Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival 2007 was between July 19 and October 7, 2007. It records 40 displays, which focuses on three major Chinese dynasties, the Qin, Tang and Song. Technicians from China to expand the screen. Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival 2008 in Toronto start from July 31. This celebration of Chinese craftsmanship and culture light up the Ontario Place waterfront until October 12, 2008. This year’s theme is about the architectural wonders of the world and the world’s animals in the seven continents .

Since 2009, the Chinese Lantern Festival has been canceled indefinitely,as originally as an activity for one year, the prospect of planning for the future is uncertain events.
I’m one designer of this Canada Chinese Lantern Festival from China, I kown the reason of Chinese Lantern Festival has been canceled is for the Financial Crisis at this year. The number of tourists did not achieve the target, from 12,000 down to 8,000. And many tourists think that tickets were too expensive at that time. Another reason is the exchange quotation between Renminbi and Canadian dollar (cad) changed from about 8:1 to 6:1 since 2007.
I hope Chinese Lantern Festival will reture Canada Toronto in the future. Even in 2010, this three-year performance is still the best Chinese Lantern Festival in the world.

Another Chinese Lantern Festival in Canada – Greater Vancouver International Lantern Festival（For the success of Chinese Lantern Festival, many places in North America want to copy this great event - Chinese Lantern Festival, but many organizers were lack of experience, have chosen a partner who were with no experience too, they were poor coordinated with their partners, so the results were all not satisfactory, it affected the reputation of Lantern Festival between Canada government and Canada people, for these reasons, the Lantern Festival which could have held in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games were rejected by the government）

I am very disappointed that this Festival is no longer held in Toronto; it seemed to me to be very popular, and a valuable tourist attraction for the city. I hope that it will once again be a part of the Toronto summer scene in future years.
How utterly disappointing! I was ready to book my vacation when I saw these photos. This year, it would have been PERFECT to move them to Vancouver to coincide with the Winter Olympics. It would have been a huge draw.
I am very very disappointed that this event is no longet held in Toronto. I did not know about this event till last year. I finally saw the pictures of the event on the internet and then found out it is discontinued:( Perhaps lack of advertising is a cause for this, Im not sure. This is something the city should really consider bringing back!

I cannot put into words how sad this is to not have the festival anymore, I had attended two years in a row and was disappointed when it was canceled last year. I was told it was due to a trash strike. Now it is canceled indefinately, we are from Buffalo, Ny and told everyone we knew to attend this breath taking event. VERY SAD!!!!
So disappointed! I was so looking forward to taking my daughters to the Chinese Lantern Festival in Toronto! Hopefully, they bring it back in future as I’d love to be there!!!
I was so disappointed last year, after having booked my vacation to cooincide with the Festival, to find out , on arrival, that it had been cancelled. I was checking today, in the hope that this years dates would be available, only to find out that the festival is indefinately cancelled. How sad.
