Chinese Shadow Theater is the appellation of shadow show and its personages products ( including props and sceneries) . Chinese Shadow Theater, which is simple and elegant with profound national flavour, has the value both for appreciation and reservation.

Terminology from wikipedia

A number of terms are used to describe the different forms.

(皮影戏, pí yĭng xì) is a shadow theatre using leather puppets. The figures are usually moved behind a thin screen and is not entirely a show of shadows as it is more of a silhouette shadow. This gives the figures some color, and is not 100% black and white.
(纸影戏, zhĭ yĭng xì) is paper shadow theatre.
(中國影戏, zhōng guó yĭng xì) is Chinese shadow theatre.

Chinese Puppet show is one important item of Lantern Festival Overseas, the Chinese Puppet Show is known as mu’ouxi (play of wooden dolls), in the country, which has its roots in remote time. Traditionally, Puppet Show comes in three forms: the rod-top puppet, the marionette or string puppet and the glove or hand puppet. In China, the rod-top puppet is the most popular show.

Chinese Acrobatics

The puppet, less than a meter tall, is made with true-to-life features. It is raised overhead at the top of a stick by the puppeteer with one hand and manipulated its action (moving a pair of wire rods) with the other hand.

One of the basic skills required of the puppeteer is to be able to hold high the puppet, which weighs 2 to 3 kilograms, with one arm and to keep it either motionless or moving steadily on the same level as dictated by the scenario.

In Canada Chinese Lantern Festival, we can’t show the Large-scale puppet show for the arena limit.

Chinese Opera Show is one important part of Lantern Festival Overseas, is originated from primitive songs and dances. Through a long-time development and absorbtion of many factors like folk dance, performance, Kungfu and other art. It forms an artistic expression form of using multiway to express life and build personages. Chinese opera show embodies the unique opera ascetic ideas and artistic features of Chinese nation.

Chinese opera whow is general stereotyped as being for senior citizens only. In my opinion, Chinese opera is a beautiful performance and the opera team actually keep up to date with current technology, they even used western musical instruments like saxophone, cello, etc. And their stage also use moving LED with Chinese text to help younger generation to understand. That was so impressive. The costumes are getting more beautiful these days, the style may be the same to retain the traditional sense, but the materials, colours and cutting have changed to give them a fresh and updated look.

Now it often performed in foreign countries, therefore it performed in the Lantern Festival of Canada, Singapore, and other large-scale Lantern Festival inforeign countries.
